Self-Adaptive Model Problems

The self-adaptive community would benefit from sharing a set of standard example problems. These would improve our ability to work out ideas, exhibit and compare techniques and results. In this set of pages, we are assembling such a collection of problems.

The idea of model problems.

The utility of model problems.

Organization

This site is organized around systems that provide examples of self adaptation. These examples are real systems that can be downloaded and executed, and exhibit the following features that make them amenable to self-adaptation:

  • Open-source implementations of systems that can be used freely by the SEAMS community.

  • Mechanisms for self-adaption: hooks for getting information out of the system (probes) and making changes to the system (effectors). These mechanisms may be extended and fed back into the source

  • Deployment and testing environment: e instructions on how to deploy the system locally, and how to test and run the system so that it can be adapted.

  • Quality concerns: a list of quality of service concerns that it exhibits.

  • Solution descriptions: pointers to solutions that have been developed by researchers applying their techniques to these problems.

Current Model Problems

Znn.com

  • This is a webserver system providing a simplified new site. The testing environment simulates the slash-dot effect which are periods of abnormally high traffic that overload the system.

Got your own model problem or solution?

This website is intended to grow with community support. We are therefore collecting other model problems and solutions. Please submit ideas for model problems, and example solutions to seams-model-problems <at> cs <dot> cmu <dot> edu. Representatives of the SEAMS Steering Committee will then engage with you to have the information added to this site.
